FAQs - General Production Music Questions

WHY MUST I LICENSE THE MUSIC THAT I USE IN MY PRODUCTIONS?
It's the right thing to do, and it's the law. All music is considered "Intellectual Property" and as such is owned by the copyright holder (i.e. the composer or the music publisher to which the representation has been assigned). A license must be obtained from the owner prior to using the music. According to the US Federal Copyright laws there are both financial and legal penalties for using music without a license.

WHAT DO THE TERMS "LASERDROP", "NEEDLEDROP", "DROP" OR "USE" MEAN?
In the Production Music Library Industry all these terms mean the same thing: Anytime a piece of music (full or partial length) starts and stops within any type of production, even if it’s the same track. The term Laserdrop™ is a trademark of Killer Tracks.

WHAT DOES "PRODUCTION BLANKET" MEAN?
A Production Blanket is a means of using unlimited amounts of music in one production for a capped or flat fee. This fee is based upon the length of the total production and the clearance category required. From time to time, the fees charged may also limit the number of music cues that can be used.

DO I NEED TO OBTAIN A PERFORMANCE LICENSE FROM ASCAP, BMI OR SESAC WHEN USING YOUR MUSIC?
Normally, No. Typically it is the responsibility of Radio, TV, Cable station or other venue that will be broadcasting (performing) the production. In some situations, however, these venues do not have a Performance Agreement with ASCAP, BMI or SESAC. In these instances the venue may require you to obtain a Performance License directly from Killer Tracks.

IF I USE A PUBLIC DOMAIN RECORDING IN YOUR LIBRARY, MUST I STILL PAY FOR IT?
Yes, the music produced and published by Killer Tracks represents a new arrangement and is copyrighted, even though the underlying work may be in the public domain. Therefore, all Killer Tracks music must be licensed.
