FAQs - Licensing Questions

WHAT DO THE TERMS "LASERDROP", "NEEDLEDROP", "DROP" OR "USE" MEAN?
In the Production Music Library Industry all these terms mean the same thing: Anytime a piece of music (full or partial length) starts and stops within any type of production, even if it’s the same track. The term Laserdrop™ is a trademark of Killer Tracks.

WHAT DOES "PRODUCTION BLANKET" MEAN?
A Production Blanket is a means of using unlimited amounts of music in one production for a capped or flat fee. This fee is based upon the length of the total production and the clearance category required. From time to time, the fees charged may also limit the number of music cues that can be used.

HOW DO I REPORT MUSIC USAGES?
Laserdrop usage can be reported by completing and submitting a Laserdrop License Application via mail, fax, phone or online on this website (online licensing form is available to registered website clients who log in).

Quarterly Music Registration for Annual Agreements can also be completed on our website as well as via mail or fax using our Quarterly Report form (quarterly report form is available to registered website clients who log in).

WHAT LICENSES AND CLEARANCES DO I NEED TO USE YOUR MUSIC?
We generally grant a Synchronization/Master Use License.

ONCE I LICENSE YOUR MUSIC, HOW LONG IS MY LICENSE GOOD FOR?
Most of our licenses grant the right to distribute the production in which our music is used "in perpetuity", provided there have not been any changes made to the audio or visual production or to the type of clearance desired. If there are changes to the audio or visual production or if different or additional clearances are needed, then the music will need to be re-licensed for that production.

HOW DO I LICENSE MUSIC FOR USE OUTSIDE OF THE UNITED STATES?
We have various clearance levels depending on where or how the music is being used. Please contact your Account Representative to determine the clearance level that you need.

WHEN DO I HAVE TO REPORT THE MUSIC I HAVE USED IN A PRODUCTION?
Music use must be reported immediately upon affixing the music to the production and prior to any public performance.

WHEN I REPORT USAGE, HOW IS THE LICENSE ISSUED TO ME?
When you report, you will receive an invoice. One side of the invoice contains all information pertinent to the license, including the name of the production, music used, fee charged and the clearances requested. The other side of the invoice is the license itself. The license becomes effective with the payment of the invoice.

IF I USE MUSIC AT A CONVENTION, IS THAT CONSIDERED A "LIVE EVENT"?
If the music is part of a video presentation, it would be considered non-broadcast and would need to be licensed as such. If the music is on CD or other formats and is played in synchronization with live action or narration, it would be considered a "live event" for licensing purposes.

CAN I USE THE MUSIC BEFORE YOU RECEIVE MY PAYMENT?
Technically, a license is not valid until payment has been received by Killer Tracks. However, as a courtesy to our established clients, the production may be shown or aired as long as the license application has been received by Killer Tracks.
